Miss Suzie

After the groundhog's prediction from yesterday, I believe we know who to blame for this blistering cold weather! I will thank him for another day home with the kiddos, though! Virtual learning is a challenge as a teacher to teach from home with two little ones and I'm sure just as hard for the parents who still have to juggle work, school work, and everything on a regular agenda. Hang in there, everyone!

As for the farm, no new kids. These two goats were bred back in September. A goats gestational period is 5 months, so we are in the window of new arrivals anytime this month. I will be sure to do a post on our breeding schedule and how we track conception in the future.

I have yet to name the two kids from the other week. It is a little doe (has the patch on her back) and a pretty nice sized buck. Any suggsetions? Leave them in the comment section.

Miss Suzie is one of our two sows. A pig's gestational period is 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. Due to their short gestational period, pigs can have up to 1-2 litters a year. She is starting to show signs of milk coming in (enlarged teats). We moved her into her own pen tonight. We don't want to leave her in with the other sow or boar because they would harm the piglets. This is Suzie's second litter. In her first litter last year, she birthed 16 piglets! That was pretty inpressive. I don't believe she will have that many this time around, but I guess we will find out soon!

Miss Suzie getting comfy in her new pen.

Willie and Corbin putting paneling along the outside of the pen. This is to keep those little piggies from escaping once they arrive.
